How to Choose an Espresso Machine: A Practical Buying Guide

Start with your budget, available space and daily routine. Consider how many drinks you make, whether you steam milk and which grinder you will use. These needs help narrow down machine types and features.

Budget for the grinder

For a non-pressurised espresso basket, choose a burr grinder that can grind fine enough and make small, repeatable adjustments. Budget for the grinder alongside the machine, plus a scale and routine maintenance. There is no fixed spending ratio that guarantees better coffee.

Start with your daily routine

Consider the number of drinks per session and whether you steam milk. A single boiler can make milk drinks but needs time to switch modes. If you often make several milk drinks together, compare machines that can brew and steam simultaneously. Check dimensions, access to the water tank, warm-up instructions, cleaning requirements and local service availability.

Check the heating system, not the price bracket

The Breville/Sage Bambino Plus uses an on-demand ThermoJet heater. The ECM Classika PID is a single boiler machine. The Rancilio Silvia Pro and Silvia Pro X are dual boiler machines. Prices vary by country and version, so check the current manufacturer specification and local price for the exact model. Similar prices do not mean similar heating systems or workflows.

Single boiler, heat exchanger or dual boiler

A single boiler used for brewing and steam switches between the two temperature modes. An HX machine heats brew water through a separate passage inside a steam boiler. A dual boiler machine has separate brew and steam boilers. HX and dual boiler designs can support brewing and steaming together. Cooling flushes, temperature control and recovery time depend on the model.

Features to compare

Look for temperature control, clear operating instructions, suitable steam capacity and parts support. Check the recommended cleaning procedure: a three-way valve alone is not permission to backflush. Some machines use a model-specific cleaning cycle instead. Consider the noise, water requirements and maintenance access you will live with every day. PID control is useful, but does not replace proper warm-up or good preparation.

Baskets and running costs

A pressurised basket can be useful with pre-ground coffee or a grinder with limited adjustment. A non-pressurised basket gives you more control but needs suitable grinding and preparation. Check basket compatibility before replacing it. Include filters or water treatment, approved cleaning products and servicing in your budget; do not assume a price or boiler size guarantees a particular lifespan.
