Cleaning Tablets vs Descaler: Two Different Products for Two Different Problems

Coffee cleaning products remove oils and residue; descalers target mineral deposits. They serve different purposes and are not interchangeable. Use products and procedures approved for your machine.

Cleaning coffee residue

Espresso cleaning products are intended to remove coffee oils and residue from approved brewing parts. Products and tablet sizes differ. Use the product, dose and cleaning cycle specified for your machine. Only backflush a machine whose manufacturer explicitly permits it; other machines may use a different cleaning cycle.

Removing mineral scale

Descaler targets mineral deposits in the water circuit. It is a different product from coffee-residue cleaner. The right product and procedure depend on the materials and design of the machine. Some manufacturers require a technician to descale the boiler rather than asking the owner to run a solution through it.

Do not substitute or mix products

Do not put cleaning tablets in the water tank unless the manufacturer specifically instructs you to do so. Do not use descaler as backflush detergent. Follow each procedure separately and complete all required rinses. Never mix cleaning chemicals, including cleaners, descalers or bleach.

When to clean or descale

Use the machine’s schedule, cleaning prompts and water specifications. Water hardness and usage affect scale formation. Total dissolved solids (TDS) is not a hardness measurement, so a TDS reading alone cannot set a descaling interval. A water filter does not necessarily remove the minerals responsible for scale. Check what your filter actually treats.

Vinegar and citric acid

Do not use a homemade acid solution unless your machine’s manufacturer provides that exact method. Food-safe ingredients are not automatically compatible with seals, metals and internal coatings. Use an approved descaler at the stated concentration and contact time, and follow the complete rinse procedure.

Changes in performance

Visible coffee residue or stale odours are reasons to check cleaning. Reduced flow, weak steam or unusual heating behaviour can have several causes, not just scale. Consult the manual or service support before running an unapproved treatment. Stop using a machine that leaks or behaves abnormally.
